Messaging stuffs are the same with the only difference being the Push Email which is supported only by the Nokia N97 and not by the other. Also, the unique DVB-H available in the N97 is not provided in the N96. This feature supports you to enjoy live TV on your mobile phone. So, you can't enjoy the TV with the N96 but surely with the N97.
Batteries differ being the Standard battery, Li-Ion 950 mAh (BL-5F) in the Nokia N96 while the other has the Standard battery, Li-Ion 1500 mAh (BP-4L). The former offers a 3G talktime support for upto 2 hours 36 minutes but the latter offers the same for upto 6 hours. Music play support is for upto 14 hours by the N96 and for upto 40 hours by the other.
